Guest Post: Beauty and the Beard

First of all I cannot tell you how excited I am to have lovely guest posts lined up until I get back on Friday. I hope you ladies enjoy what they've come up with (I know I do!). First up is my favorite blogging friend Laura from Beauty & the Beard. Why you ask? Not only does she cook great things on her blog and come up with amazing DIY projects, she is also a fellow badger like me! We didn't know each other in college, but any girl that puts cheese on everything is okay in my book. Thank you SO much for putting a post together for me. I know I ran out to Target and purchased everything you posted about for my trip. Now go check out her blog- you will not be disappointed!

Hello you lovely styleash readers!
Although I'm a little mad at Ashley for being in Mexico, I guess the fact she asked me to do a guest post makes up for it [butnotreally]. I'm Laura from Beauty & the Beard and am someone who has flying down to a science..or at least...being ready for a plane ride down to a science. I was just in the air this weekend, and so coming up with in-flight essentials and the best outfit to wear on a plane wasn't too difficult!
-------------------------------
Now, don't look at this list and assume I'm a boring grandma. I promise I'm a fun 24 year old- but trust me, these are 6 necessities for flying:
 1. Whether it's dehydration from plane hopping or a baby crying in aisle 4, headaches happen. Be ready.
2. Keep bobby pins handy to keep your hair out of your way. I mean, I guess this is a necessity day-to-day, but if you're stressed out finding your boarding passes, the last thing you need is your hair up in your grill.
3. Airplanes are dry. Fact. Keep your lips from cracking!
4. Ear popping stinks, and chewing gum (and yawning!) will help the process during takeoff and landing.
5. Babies cry, old men snore, dudes play their iPods too loud. Bring ear plugs for a quiet ride.
6. Please, for the love of what/whomever your believe in, BRING HAND SANITIZER. Do you have any idea how many people touched that SkyMall magazine today? No? You don't want to. Bleh.

--------------------------
Yes, if we lived in the glory days of flying where it was an honor to ride a plane and there wasn't 20 layers of security, I'd be dressed to the nines flying too. Times have changed, but there's no need to look like you just rolled out of bed either! If all else fails: layer, layer, layer.

1. Layering is key, so start with a basic tee in case the plane gets hot! No one likes to be sweaty, it's a fact.
2. A big cardigan is a great way to layer- comfortable, loose, and warm enough in case the plane gets chilly.
3. Stretchy pants. Black skinnies. Enough said.
4. Flats, or other easy slip on shoes. You know you'll need to take your shoes off for security, so don't waste your time tying on tennis shoes or pulling on high riding boots. Simple, comfy flats are the way to go.
5. If you're still hoping to be stylish (which I'm sure you are since you read styleash), make sure to wear plastic jewelry! There's plenty of cute plastic chains out there- they're light and won't set off any metal detectors. In my last flight I had a nice old TSA pat down because I was wearing a metal watch & necklace. Totally dropped the ball there.

**Items to avoid? Anything that is tight or requires a lot of effort to take off and on. Flying should be comfortable and easy!

Thanks so much for having me Ash, hope you're having a great time in Mexico!

Today's the day!

I'm finally leaving for vacation ( I know, I've been talking about it for about 8 years now). By the time you are reading this post I'll most likely be flying the friendly skies since my flight is super early. But, enough about that- There are a few other important events that take place today (and tomorrow).

Happy Birthday baby brother!

I hope you get all of the video games and soda pop you could ever want.

And Happy 7th Anniversary to my other half!
I wouldn't trade one minute of the 3,681,636 we've spent together. Thanks for putting up with my craziness (and me insisting you wear collared shirts). You really are the best.

Thursday Things

I'm pretty sure it's a proven fact that the day before a vacation is the longest day of your life. Well, it is in my case anyways. So to distract myself, I've put together a few things that are getting me through this Thursday.

Image Detail
This show is so strange it's funny. Has anyone been watching?

Other things on the internet:
- This great  fridge makeover by Joanna Goddard. If only I had a fridge of my own to decorate.
- I plan on trying this gooey chocolate skillet cake as soon as I get home from vacation.
- Her thoughts on style really had me asking myself, "Why do I wear the clothes that I do?"
- A stunning infinity ring that I would love to snag up.
- A feature on the woman behind my favorite cupcakes in the whole wide world.
- Do you think Kate every gets tired of looking perfect? Classy and effortless.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Need, Want, Must Have

I have definitely overspent this month. I know this because I got an email from mint.com stating I "exceeded my budget for clothing". Here are a few things I'm lusting after this week that unfortunately will not be making their way into my closet any time soon. My personal favorites are that adorable elephant necklace and those polka dot pants from J.Crew (so many ways to style!). What are you loving this week?

Closet Cleanup {Part 1}

I moved home almost a year ago and I never really got my closet in order. I am fortunate in that I have a ton of space since it is a walk in, however it only has one shelf all the way around so it makes it a little difficult to organize. Try not to judge me too much for the before pictures (I'm a busy lady and spend about 10 minutes a day in my bedroom). To put it bluntly it was just a mess- hangers sticking out, shirts thrown in every which way, and don't get me started on the piles of shoes.

Before:

See? I told you it was bad. So yesterday I decided to get my life together (or at least my closet). I organized it by type of shirt (sleeveless, short sleeve, blouse, collared, casual, sweaters) and then did it by color within each category. I am not 100% sure this is the way I'm going to keep it but for now it works. I also started transitioning everything onto those thin black hangers you see. I know everyone says this, but they really are the best. I kept my sweaters/blazers/jackets on wooden hangers. Note: if you don't have as much hanging space as I do sweaters are very easy to store folded.

After:

So far so good? Right? I still need to go out and buy more hangers and I have yet to tackle that mess of sweatshirts taking over the top shelf (it's quite scary). But the main issue I'm still having is in regards to my ever growing shoe collection. I have two behind-the-door shoe racks that I use but that leaves me with all of the shoes you see in the picture below. I don't want to use the shoe rack in the picture anymore because my heels don't fit very nicely on it and it's hard to see them. I also have no idea what to do with the 12 pairs of boots in the corner.

To be continued:

Do you have any ideas for organizing my shoes? What do you use in your closet? How do you store your boots? I would really appreciate any ideas you may have :)

Weekend Recap

As you know, this weekend I went to the Cubs game with some girlfriends from high school. In preparation for Saturday- I stayed in Friday night and went to see The Lucky One (Zac Efron you are ridiculously good looking). I had a great time downtown Saturday and stayed out until almost 2 am. Needless to say I did not leave my couch yesterday. What did you do this weekend? Anything fun? I'll leave you with a few snapshots from the weekend & 2 new purchases from the Piperlime sale:

Friday's Fancies: Primped for a Picnic

Happy Friday! For this week's Friday's Fancies we're headed to a picnic. To be honest, I've never been on a picnic- I need to get on that this summer. But, if I did attend a picnic I would wear this. I also would add a bottle of chardonnay and a cheese tray because life is just better with wine and cheese. As always, stop by Long Distance Loving for more outfit inspiration.

The Kardashian's are at my work today. I've been at work for approx. 20 minutes and that's all anyone will talk about. I could care less about them but I will definitely be going down to see them in person- just because I can. What are your plans this weekend? I'll be staying in tonight and then heading to the Cubs game tomorrow with 3 of my friends form high school. I miraculously snagged $12 tickets and I couldn't be more excited! xx

Which Suit?

Should I purchase for vacation? Serious question. I noticed I have way too many solid biknis and I need a little print in my life. I'm torn between them all (especially since the shell print bikini is only about $24). I also realize yesterday I said I was done shopping- I'm making an exception (and have no self control). So I'd love to know which one you like best! And if you have any other recommendations for cute suits- please share.

Need, Want, Must Have

It's time for a self induced intervention of sorts. As you all are well aware, both Piperlime & Shopbop had 20% sales this week which left my shopping carts full and my wallet very empty. I couldn't help myself (who am I kidding? I can never help myself). Therefore this week's need, want, must have is all under $100. I promised Laura I wouldn't rub in my vacation to Mexico next week but it has definitely been on my mind while shopping lately. That Old Navy coverup is perfect for the beach or laying by the pool all summer & that tote bag is the perfect mix of tribal prints and bright hues. I am on the hunt for the perfect pair of white jeans (that don't break the bank) so if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them!

White On White

I used to hate white walls. In fact, I hated them so much I painted mine hot pink and lime green when I was 14. I would like to go back in time and kick myself since I now have to deal with the brightest bedroom in the world until I move out of my parent's house. My opinion of white walls has changed drastically since then and I've been seeing all white rooms pop up all over. An all white bedroom is crisp, clean, and effortlessly chic when the right elements are added. Would you go all white? Or do you like a pop of color?

Monday Mantra

bippityboppityboo:

#1 on my list - marrying you.

Whether it be timing, financial issues, etc. I know there are a few things on my bucket list that have been pushed aside for more practical things. For instance I would love to take a cooking or photography class, finish my final classes of French I passed up in college, and move to Europe for a few months (if only!).This quote has me thinking it's about time I make some of these things happen.  Is there something you've always wanted to do but for some reason or another couldn't fit it into the plan?
Happy Monday! xx

Friday's Fancies: Pretty in Pastels

Happy Friday! This week {av} wanted us to showcase one of Spring's most popular trends: pastels. If you're unsure of the trend I'd go with a cheap fashion piece like a pastel belt or that cute watch. But, if you're feeling daring, I'd pair a pastel blouse/dress with something edgier like a black leather jacket. I think the contrast instantly looks chic. What do you think of the trend? Any styling tricks you prefer?

This weekend I have zero plans. The boyfriend has been gone all week and I cannot wait to pick him up from airport at 3 this afternoon (counting the minutes). And then my mom's having a little happy hour tonight & that's it. It's nice not to have any set plans and I will most likely finish organizing my closet (I started 2 days ago). It's still in shambles which is typical of my messy self. What are your plans this weekend?

Need, Want, Must Have

All this week I've been virtually browsing for my upcoming vacation to Mexico. However, I'm trying to have self control in the purchasing department since it's only socially acceptable to live with your parents for so long. I've been drawn to a lot of feminine colors lately like corals and pinks as well as a vibrant print. I think that Topshop skirt does an amazing job of combining many things I'm loving lately- high/low hem, digital florals, and vibrant colors. I will definitely be purchasing a few things (like those sandals I ordered yesterday and the Bauble Bar earrings I have in my cart currently) but overall I am just going to have to pretend this is my online closet for now. Is there anything you're really loving this week?

Get the Look (For Less!)

I first fell in love with the blog world 3 years ago and it is all because of  Emily from Cupcakes & Cashmere. There is something so wonderful about her style, her recipes, and her life in general that makes me want to live a more stylish life myself. I'm sure everyone reads her posts daily which means you saw her post from yesterday. I adore this outfit for it's simplicity yet it's the little details like a pop of hot pink & a sequin clutch that turns an everyday LWD & jean jacket into a fashion statement. I put together a similar look (with the exact jean jacket she's wearing since it was too good to pass up) that is only $50 more than just the dress in her post. While it's a beautiful dress, I don't know about you guys but dropping $500 on an outfit is not in my budget.

Weekend Recap

This Easter weekend was pretty laid back. Friday night consisted of catching up on my favorite tv shows, movies, and pizza. Saturday we had some family friends over that we haven't seen in months. It was so nice to catch up and the weather was beautiful. Here are a few of my favorite things from the weekend:

A bright yellow Easter centerpiece from the garden.

Dying Easter eggs with some of my favorite little ones.

On Friday I went to a local graphic design office that my friend works at to judge the annual "Peep Show". These were two of my favorites:

James & the Giant Peep                                                                                 Bunzilla Attacks Tokyo

My favorite guy.

Do anything exciting this weekend?

Friday's Fancies: Flower Power

Happy Friday everyone! This has literally been the longest week of my life and I was worried today would never get here. This week for Friday's Fancies {av} had us put together our favorite floral looks. I decided to style 2 outfits- one with a floral print bottom and one with a floral print top. I don't ever think I could pull of floral on floral, buuuuut maybe someday.

What is everyone doing this weekend? I'm heading downtown tonight, have some family friends coming over tomorrow for a BBQ at my parents, and then I have very little planned for Easter. I'm going to attempt some sort of brunch, so if anything I cook turns out semi-decent I'll be sure to share next week.

Need, Want, Must Have

This week I've spent way too much time browsing the Shopbop sale and this is just a small taste of everything I need, want, and must have this week. There are tons of on-trend items on sale like that Alice + Olivia peplum skirt, tons of sandals, and a lot of rompers/cover-ups that are perfect for a future vacation to the beach. I haven't decided which things I'm going to purchase (I'm trying to have self control and not buy everything) but some of these things will definitely be making their way to me soon! Have you shopped the sale yet? I'd love to know about your finds!

Lose the Sleeves

I love a good blouse. In fact, I've been attempting to clean out my closet and there has been a hostile take over in my closet by sheer blouses. I can't get enough of them. Since I'm hoping the weather in Chicago warms up permanently pretty soon-  I am dying to grab myself a few sleeveless blouses. I plan to pair them with skinny jeans and a great heel, or even tucked into a skirt with flat sandals. The best part about a sleeveless blouse? You can throw a cardigan, jacket, blazer over it and you've created a new look. The possibilities are endless.

Weekend Recap

Happy Monday! This weekend was rather uneventful- which was amazing. I went to a family party on Saturday to celebrate my cousin's baby boy arriving any day now. It was so good to see everyone. I even got to try an all-natural fruit flavored vodka (which was delicious). Yum!

Yesterday I started reading 50 Shades of Grey. I knew very little about the series except that it was inspired by Twilight (and like The Hunger Games, I love me some Twilight). I literally couldn't put it down. I'm already 70% through the second book. Has anyone else read it? Thoughts?

What do you all do this weekend? Whatever you did, I hope you had an amazing time!
